Baseball season is quickly approaching. Teams have switched from offseason to preseason mode and have already begun Spring Training. Fans nationwide wait for the beginning of the 162 game season to decide the World Series champion. For the Mets, expectations are higher than any other year in recent history. Last year, New York was the surprise of the MLB, making it all the way to the World Series only to lose to Kansas City in 5 games. Fortunately, the Mets core of stars are all returning for another season. This includes the best pitching staff in baseball featuring Matt Harvey, Jacob deGrom, Noah Syndergaard, Steven Matz, and Bartolo Colón. The Mets also get back Zack Wheeler, a promising young starting pitcher who had missed all of last year due to an elbow injury. With his addition to the already dominant pitching staff, the Mets look to be the strongest pitching team for the second year straight.
The big difference between last year’s team and this year’s is that the Mets’ offense will be much stronger throughout the entire year. At the midway point in the season last year, New York was the worst scoring team in the league. To fix this, they have acquired outfielder Yoenis Cespedes who immediately bolstered the offense and turned New York into a run scoring machine. He returns for the 2016 season on the heels of a $75 million contract and looks to continue his production. The Mets have also strengthened their lineup by adding second baseman Neil Walker and shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera. Each infielder brings better defense to the team and veteran experience. The Mets will also get a full season out of the second year outfielder Michael Conforto. Last year, Conforto was called up from the minor leagues to improve the offense—and man, did he deliver. His bat provided offense in left field from the time he was called up late in the season all the way to the World Series, where he had two home runs in one game. Now that he has more experience, the Mets expect big things out of him for the entire year. If everyone stays healthy this season, New York seems to be ready for another trip to the postseason. They will have a great chance to avenge their World Series loss last year and win a championship for the first time since 1986.
