Stop the Suffering

People are fighting wars all over the world. Whether the disputes are about land, religion, or politics, innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire. Why must so many lives be lost over such trivial and insignificant disagreements?

Right now, there are so many crises happening in the Middle East, especially Syria. ISIS, a bloodthirsty terrorist group is trying to gain power in the country, and civilians are fleeing in search of safety and opportunity. Their goal is to create division and chaos all over the world. No religion teaches killing, ISIS is fueled by evil, not Islam.

According to CNN, a Syrian becomes a refugee every 15 seconds and the number of refugees rose from 230,671 to over 2 million in a year. There has been an increase of nearly 1.8 million people over the past 12 months. Additionally, 4.25 million people have been displaced. UNHCR said, "more than 6 million people have been torn from their homes in the country. More Syrians are now forcibly displaced than is the case with any other country."

The refugees say, ‘We’ve come this far, we have walked 200km’. Some of them haven’t slept for nine days, and they say they can’t go back, they don’t have a home to go back to in Syria.

A CNN article states, “Syria is hemorrhaging women, children and men who cross borders often with little more than the clothes on their backs." It is heartbreaking to think that these people left their homes in search for a new and better life, only to find themselves in the same, or even worse, situation than they were before.“They’re saying, ‘We’ve left one war zone to find ourselves in another – where are our human rights?’

I have the same question- where is the humanity? Human beings are being treated in such an unacceptable and inhumane way. it is despicable to think that the refugees are being denied access to shelter, food, and sanitation because of irrelevant differences. Humans are not being treated like humans anymore. There is so much inequality and there is nothing being done about it.

Why are these innocent people suffering? What have they done wrong?

The Syrians who are being rejected by multiple countries and living on the streets don’t have access to medical care, food, and many other necessities. Many of them have serious injuries that cannot be cured due to their lack of resources.

As Ghandi said, “An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind.”

If this bloodshed continues, there might not be a chance for peace. We need peaceful leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi again to put an end to this global hatred and violence. Our own Eleanor Roosevelt created the declaration of human rights and she should be an example for the world at large.

History Honors Society Wrapping Party

Hot chocolate, pretzels, marshmallows, wrapping paper and boxes towered feet high; that’s what you would have seen in the cafeteria during the History Honors Society wrapping party. After school, the café was filled with teens getting their volunteering hours while having fun and helping the community. Hundreds of gifts were being wrapped for the children at the Astor Home. Many of the children residing there were not fortunate enough to get gifts from parents or family. The wrapping party exists as a fun activity that helps provide for those who do not have the same as others. If only you could see their faces when they opened the gifts donated by the John Jay Student Body and teachers. Gifts ranged from giant teddy bears to Pokémon cards and comfy clothes, each specially wrapped by students for a great cause. It was really amazing to see how the John Jay community came together to make this happen. I cannot wait until next year to do it again! By Chelsea Co.

Syrian Civil War

By Nico Z. The Syrian crisis is one of the most complicated international crises in the world. With clashes between government forces and opposition forces, Syria is plagued by a violent civil war that has resulted in at least 250,000 deaths and the rise of Islamic militant groups. Multiple international interventions have only added to the turmoil. It seems as if there is no solution to the conflict. Or is there? March 15, 2011: The Syrian Civil War began as a series of civilized protests against President Bashar al-Assad. Notorious for its poor human rights record and tyrannical nature, the Assad regime responded with violent crackdowns. As a result, there was further unrest. The government’s use of force only worsened the violence. Four months later, the riots were nationwide. Ever since the beginning of the civil war, the United States, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey, have supported the rebels by supplying them with weapons and other military equipment. Round of Applause

At John Jay, we are known for having good athletic teams, ranging from football to volleyball, and no one can deny that we are proud of all our athletes. However, I think there should be an equal amount of pride when it comes to the arts. On February 19th, the Talent Show—hosted by La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (Spanish Honor Society)—displayed phenomenal talent. Experiencing it first-hand, I was floored by how amazing all the performances were. At one moment, we were watching a Spanish cultural dance with amazing coordination and then the next, a satire on political debates with Ben Carson falling asleep in the middle of it. We even witnessed the epic rap style of Mr. Davis, with lines flowing so fast, I think he dropped a whole mixtape in just four minutes. If you didn’t come to watch, you also unfortunately missed the reigning champions, now called “Desi Empire.” With their mix of Indian dancing and American pop music, they killed it, earning their spot as number one.
